Participate in Dublin Sound Lab's Music Current; Commission Opportunity

Dublin Sound Lab presents Music Current, a new festival showcasing Irish electronic music and contemporary international repertoire, Smock Alley Theatre and Contemporary Music Centre, Dublin, 7–9 April 2016. The festival provides opportunities for performance, collaborations and professional development.

Dublin Sound Lab invites composers, performers, engineers, or researchers, of any age or nationality, with experience or interest in electronic composition and performance, to participate in masterclasses, workshops and concerts. Instrumentalists, engineers, and musicologists are also welcome to apply and may do so without the need to submit scores or recordings.

To apply, composers are invited to submit new or existing works for any combination of violin, cello, computer or live electronics. Submissions that employ two or more players will be preferred. Works by selected composers will be considered for performance in final festival concert by Lucy Railton (cello) and Aisha Orazbayeva (violin) at Smock Alley Theatre, Dublin, 9 April 2016. As many as three composers/works will be selected for performance from the participating composers. Dublin Sound Lab can provide certain technical facilities and assistance where needed. 

Composers selected to participate will automatically be considered for a commission of €2,500. Application is free, but places will be strictly limited. Composers selected to participate will be asked to pay €75 participation fee (by electronic transfer) before 1 April 2016. 

Participating composers will avail of:

  • Entrance to four concerts and all festival events and presentations
  • Participation in workshops and masterclasses with guest composers Ann Cleare, Gráinne Mulvey, and Jennifer Walshe
  • Consideration of submitted work for performance in final festival concert by Lucy Railton and Aisha Orazbayeva, at Smock Alley Theatre, Dublin, 9 April 2016 (as many as three works will be selected) 
  • Consideration for a commission of €2,500 to be premiered at Music Current 2017
  • Contemporary Music Centre Travel Bursary to cover travel costs within the island of Ireland

Submission Materials:

  • One score (for any combination of violin, cello, computer or live electronics) in PDF format
  • Two audio recordings (forward links to online media only, please do not send audio files as email attachments)
  • A one-page biography
  • A short expression of interest concerning your experience or work in electronic music composition and performance.

Deadlines:
Application must be emailed to [email protected] before 4 March 2016.
Selected composers will be notified before 18 March 2016.
Selected composers should pay €75 participation fee (by electronic transfer) before 1 April 2016.
