AIC Member - Gerard Power


Gerard Power was born in Waterford, Ireland. He studied composition with Fintan O’Carroll and Eric Sweeney in Waterford and with Hormoz Farhat in Dublin. In 1995 he graduated with an M.Litt in composition from Trinity College Dublin. In 2000 he completed a DPhil in composition at the University of York, England, where his teachers included David Blake and Roger Marsh . He also studied with Professor John Eaton at the University of Chicago and attended the Darmstadt International Summer School in Germany. He was a composer-in-residence at Visby International Centre for Composers in Gotland, Sweden in 2002.

He has written orchestral, chamber, instrumental and choral works. Among these are Gelert (1999) for chamber ensemble (premiered by Concorde in 1999); and Top Quark (1999) for wind band (premiered by the University of York Symphony Orchestra). He has represented Ireland at the ISCM World Music Days festival on two occasions: his orchestral work Cyclopsleep (1999) was performed at the 2002 World Music Days in Hong Kong and his Wind Quintet was performed at the 2003 World Music Days in Slovenia.

Awards include first prize in the 1995 Arklow Music Composers Competition, the Vinson Award, a doctoral studentship from the University of York, and from the Arts Council / An Comhairle Ealaíon, a composers' postgraduate study award and an artist’s bursary. His piece Développés (2006), for violin and piano, was selected by the SPNM reading panel for inclusion on their 2006 shortlist.
