AIC Member - Scott McLaughlin

Scott McLaughlin grew up in Co. Clare playing in indie-rock bands, after several years of this he found that the music he wanted to be making didn't fit well to guitar, bass and drums, so he went to study music at the University of Ulster at Jordanstown: gaining his B.Mus degree in 2001. He has recently completed his PhD studies with Pierre Alexandre Tremblay and Bryn Harrison at the University of Huddersfield: with support from an Arts Council Professional Development and Training Award. He has attended the Czech Republic's Ostrava Days Festivals 2005 and 2007, and the Ennis/IMRO Composition Summer School from 2000 to 2002.

His output includes works for solo instrumental, ensemble, vocal, choral and electro-acoustic mediums: with performances by Iain Harrison, Wake Up, Trio Scordatura, Stephen Altoft, Concorde, Simon Mawhinney, the Goldberg Ensemble, Soosvuk Ensemble, COMA Yorkshire, Firebird Ensemble and Susan Doyle. He has received a number of awards, including the Siemens Feis Ceoil IMRO Award in 2005 and the Mostly Modern/IMRO Young Composers’ Competition in 2003.

Currently he is focusing on open-ended works for solo instruments with live electronics, and works for homogeneous ensembles.

As a performer, Scott McLaughlin is a free improvisor on cello, guitar and live electronics. He performs with the groups ‘Murmansk’ and the ‘Deserted Village Collective’ and has released several albums on independent labels in Ireland and Europe. He is a member of the Association of Irish Composers.
