Karen Power completed her PhD in Composition at the Sonic Arts Research Centre, Belfast under
Michael Alcorn.
Her initial interest in composition came during her undergraduate degree in University College Cork
(UCC), where she familiarized herself with as many musical styles as were on offer.
This musical diversity continues to shape the character of her musical output.
She completed an MA in Composition in UCC in 2000 and is currently working as a music technician
in Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick.
Most of Karen's musical output draws on a combination of acoustic instruments
and electro acoustic sound sources (although at time dealt explored separately). She continues
to have her music performed throughout Europe and the US, with one of her recent string quartets,
'You Me’, receiving its premiere in Serbia. She recently won an Experimentation Award with the
Belltable Theatre, Limerick which enabled a sound/video installation exhibition throughout November 2008.
Karen Power is an active member of the AIC (Association of Irish Composers)
the SPNM (Society for the Promotion of New Music), the IWMA (International
Women in Music Association), SEAMUS (Society of Electro Acoustic Music in the US) and
a former member of the ICC (YCC).
